If gay marriage is illegal then why isnt atheist marriage illegal?

I mean we are sinners too. Whats up with that? You let us get married, but not them? I say that since all sin is equal in gods eyes, why should you let some sin be done and others not? Why not make all non-christian marriage illegal?





Also, why do people think marriage is a christian thing? It was started by the greeks, long before the new testament. They were not christians, to be sure...If gay marriage is illegal then why isnt atheist marriage illegal?
Gays can marry in a few states and get the same benefits as heterosexuals. A teacher where I work has been with his partner for 15 years, and they plan on moving to Boston where they recognize gay marriage. If gay marriage is illegal then why isnt atheist marriage illegal?
The reason that gay marriage is illegal in most states is because the original legal definition of marriage (from the 18th and 19th century) was an exclusive union between a man and a woman. It was influenced by the bible which in turn resulted from greek and roman culture, remember, the Jews believed that polygamy was ok until only just prior to the birth of Jesus, ie, when Roman and Greek culture came into dominance in the Mediteranean.





Thus, the law is abstract from although influenced by culture. It is reflective but not bound to follow social rules.
Gay marriage is legal in Finland and Sweden as well. They are only missing the right to adopt children. I believe, they will get to adopt children within some years. . Our lesbian couples already may have children, because women can get pregnant with any man who wants to help them to have a child.





Finland's protestant evangelical lutheran christian church (the mainstream) has female priests and there are some lesbians as well. Naturally they were first objected by some of the male priests, but the heads of the institution in Finland did not accept the arbitrary behavior of their male workers and forced them to work with their female counterparts.





If male priests will reject working, they have to be without job or then we nordic pagans may stone them for disappointing us and not serving gender equality.





Share of atheists might be percentually greater and they make more noise about themselves. That's why their rights are probably more protected? You're right that marriage is not christian thingie only and it's roots are not in christianity.





In Finland civil union = marriage. There is no any difference.





Hearing blahblahblach at church is not the only definition for marriage. Nordic civil union is exactly same and marriage has nothing to do with god in the end. Marriage is a legal non-religious agreement in the first place that affects taxation of family and the policy how bequest is shared.

Honestly, there are exactly the same number of arguments for banning marriage of atheists as gays:


1 - They are not following the Bible or are not true believers.





But really, christianity does not have a monopoly on marriage - it exists in many religions, and predates christianity. In fact what if another religion allowed or even supported gay marriage? What right does the government have to stop that holy union?





Marriage should simply be a legal union of 2 people, and that is all. If a religion wants to celebrate it as something special they can, but the legal marriage should be properly secular.
I agree. I had a totally secular wedding, but I still have a marriage license. It's just one more instance of the christians legislating their beliefs and making everyone follow their way of life.

The arguments against gay marriage really shatter pretty quickly. It's hard to rationalize something that stems from superstition; inevitably the curtain comes down and the truth is revealed.

Gay marriage is marriage between the same sexes.. which is far worse (being intimate with the same sex..ugh!!)then atheist (not believing in God) marriage which is I think between the opposite sex.
Because we can't abuse the system to get our friends on our health care, or get tax rebates. I don't think the government should offer marriage incentives in the first place.
