People who oppose gay marriage, what is the definition of bigot?

: a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices ; especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance

-Merriam WebsterPeople who oppose gay marriage, what is the definition of bigot?
That definition can be applied both ways

Aren't Atheist obstinately or intoleranty devoted to his of her Opinions and prejudices ?

Do Not Atheist treat members of Chrstianity with hatred and Intolernance ?

Yet I get a Barrage of thumbs down for simply speaking the truth.

Now Look at the answers given below, OMG! and You cannot see the torrent of Hatred and Bigotry being spewed out towards Christians ?People who oppose gay marriage, what is the definition of bigot?
The opposition to gay marriage has nothing to do with hatred or intolerance. It's about the value of life.

Human life of all kinds is to be respected and treated as sacred. Human life is sacred that's why we oppose abortion. If all life is to be respected and considered sacred then the act that creates life is considered sacred too. If the marriage act is considered sacred then marriage itself is sacred.

Every human life is a result of a creative act between a man and a woman. No one has ever been conceived from a homosexual act. It is only in the context of heterosexual intimacy that life is created. Therefore only the relationship between a man and a woman can be considered sacred, and sacramental
By that definition there are many gays that fall into that same mold. I know those that hate Christians because of who they ar and what they believe. Hatred is a horrible scourge on this world. It leads only to violence and sorrow. However that does not mean because I stand up for a moral value that is marriage is between a man and a woman I hate anyone. Why can we not legally justify a civil union, with the same rights (which already exists in California) without changing the definition of marriage? I believe that the reason people ant to change this definition has nothing to do with rights as much as it has to do with wanting to remove God from our lives and to show intolerance towards the Christian faith.
Your point? Everyone acts out of bigotry at some point in their lives. I'm tired of people who have certain moral standards being labeled in such ways. And if you are trying to say that those who oppose gay marriage are bigots, you are partially right. Some do it out of hatred, others do it out of love and the respect of traditional marriage, some do it because it is what they know to be morally right. We can hate the sin, but love the sinner.
For all the brainiacs who claim the definition goes both ways, could you please explain your position and give examples? And remember, calling you a bigot is not an act of bigotry, it's an expression of opinion based on your tendencies to withhold the rights of one group based on what your religious book says.
Bigot:

noun

a person who holds blindly and intolerantly to a particular creed, opinion, etc.

a narrow-minded, prejudiced person

Does disagreeing with someone on an issue make one a bigot? If so, then we all are bigots. Do we have a strong opinion on something? Unwilling to change our views? Then we are bigots.

Are gays unwilling to understand or accept the heterosexual life style? They are bigots!
They don't care, because to them gays like me are automatically less of a human being, how dare I ask for rights and if you complain too loudly the great R%26amp;S circle jerk of regulars stops congratulating themselves for a minute and gangs up on you
Jeff's right...I hope you are ready for homophobic rants which typically end with the person blaming G-d for their ignorance and small mindedness.
When a man can have a baby then I will be for it.

Not a woman who calls herself a man.

IT WAS,IT IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE A SIN.

Now what part of that don't you understand?
Acts 5:29 ';鈥淲e must obey God as ruler rather than men';

Nuff Said
Looks like you answered your own question. Don't you wish this were a discussion board sometimes?
Be prepared to be barraged by incoherent ramblings and copy and pastes.
we ought to redefine the word bigotry to be inclusive, and fair and not exclude people.
I like to see them fundies twisting the question instead of addressing it.
hate is a requirement
I don't hate gay people. I don't approve of their actions.
wouldn't it be better to direct them to the concepts of repression and redirection?
It goes both ways.

Whatever gave anyone the idea it doesn't?
I have got to hear their answers to this. Star for you!!
I think the belief that homosexuality is sinful is a harmful and potentially dangerous one.

Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13, Romans 1, and other passages are used as justification for their hatred by those who wish to deny gay people equivalent rights in - I read and hear - parts of the US. Persecution of minorities who harm no-one is evil to my way of thinking. This is a harmful belief, and a threat to freedoms and Human Rights in democracies.

The view that they ';hate the sin but love the sinner'; is at best nonsense and at worst hypocritical. If they condemn someone's lifestyle, or deny them rights, they are creating conditions in which the people targeted can feel uncomfortable, or even under threat; that is practically the same as hating your fellow humans.
the gay marraige ban is mostly and rigorously pressed by the prejudice churches. so they do contradict their own beliefs by placing judgement upon them for having a different lifestyle...thats not compassion, love or even understanding...let us just be glad that the churches are not as powerful as they once were...they would burn us all at the stake, even for something so stupid as letting a woman make decisions in a relationship or business...even taking the role of Head of Household...bye bye single mothers...by rule of the church

want to hear a secret: The word ';Sin'; was made to be used as a slur against those who are different or live with different ethical codes.
I oppose gay marriage, but I'm not a bigot. God Himself opposes gay marriage since He opposes man to lay with man. God isn't a bigot; He's righteous.

Edit:@Armor of God- It doesn't matter how many thumbsdown you get. God has two thumbs up for you!
