Is there any decent argument against same-sex marriage?

I mean, all I've ever heard from people that are against it is that it is either unnatural or ';immoral';. Does anyone actually have a *good* argument against it?Is there any decent argument against same-sex marriage?
No, and that's why anti-gay marriage protests against equality-rights bills are failing all over the country. There is no ';proof';, scientifically or otherwise, that gay relationships are detrimental to ANYONE. Quite to the contrary, gay couples -- many of whom have waited DECADES to marry -- have loving, caring relationships and provide loving homes. Unlike heterosexual couples, there are no ';steps'; that need to be taken (ie marriage). Gay couple stay together for love; not for legal or economic reasons. That motivation should radiate through society!

Screech - your argument makes no sense. The primary purpose of marriage is not to reproduce. What about couples that can't reproduce, or choose not to - are they not entitled to be married? The government has no place in the bedrooms of American citizens. The Constitution was based on ideals at the time of its inception, but it is a living document. We don't like in 1776 now, and our constitutional ideals should reflect that.

As far as the bigamy argument goes, you contradict yourself. If you don't believe it gay marriage, you certainly can't believe in bigamy; it's against ';christian'; ideals. It's not appropriate ammo to use against gay marriage, since ';christianity'; doesn't support either proposition. Is there any decent argument against same-sex marriage?
There is a point I do want to make. Explain how it is unconstitutional to tell someone they can't marry someone of the same sex but it is not unconstitutional to tell someone they can't have more than one lover. Then get back to me on that inconsistency.

Same-sex marriage is ridiculous. People in California and Massachusetts can enjoy it all they want. You can't have children, so in my opinion, it's just being greedy to society. You get more benefits that way. Plus even if you did adopt, which doesn't solve matters, a child's life will be corrupted if he/she is raised by 2 people of the same sex.

The constitution was written on Christian principles. Marriage is primarily made up of a man and a woman. Now I am all for alternative lifestyles. You can choose your own sexual orientation, but the marriage shouldn't happen. And don't try to tell me people are born with it. That is 0% correct. Also, what bugs me is most same-sex couples want equal rights but don't want equal responsibilities with them. Can't have it both ways.
Many homosexuals complain that they just want the legal protection, like if their partner becomes sick or dies, they want to be considered the ';spouse.'; However, homosexuals can get the same legal protection that a married couple has, they just have to go about it a different way. Wills, trusts, power of attorney. These are all legal documents they could use to do what they wish to do.

So, if the argument that they want the same legal protection as a married couple is moot, what do they really want? Acceptance.

They really want society to accept their lifestyle and accept the notion that a homosexual union is in all ways equal to a heterosexual union. This notion is fundamentally false.

A Homosexual coupling cannot create children, while the majority of heterosexual marriages do. Our modern society has added many legal trappings to marriage, however, marriage, the union of a man and a woman, is fundamentally the formation of a family.

And without getting into arguments like, ';well, hetersexuals get divorced, and that's not good for children,'; or ';homosexuals can adopt'; let me just say that there are multiple studies that show that children benefit from being raised in a stable home with a mother and a father. While there may be many successful homes that do not fit this mold, it is nonetheless the ideal.

Now does it then follow that homosexuality should be penalized or made illegal? Of course not. But let's not delude ourselves. If you call someone who is ';fat'; ';height challenged,'; they are still fat. Calling both a homosexual union and a heterosexual union ';marriage'; does not make them equal.

One more thought: The government is not in anyone's bedroom. The consummation police didn't visit, to make sure my husband and I had done the deed, and we're not required to produce children.
The state has no business getting involved in any marriage. Those that say they want that ';right'; are actually begging for the state to get into their personal life.

Why ask the state for permission to do something that the state has no business being involved in??

Why not just go to a notary with a private agreement and then record it with the county? That is just as legal.
Well, the legal arguement is mostly in the actual wording itself. ';Legalese';, the very cut-and-dry, loophole-free language of lawyers and paralegals, defines marriage as a legal union between man and woman. Allowing homosexual ';marriages'; changes the definition of marriage.
I think if the word marriage was changed in your question, the problem could be dealt with. Why don't you say, a committed relationship? ( power of attorney), and legally have the person in-titled to your affairs, in all Aspects? Get off the word ';marriage';.
It tarnishes the institution of marriage. It takes what's intended to start and have a family and it perverts it into something it's not supposed to be.
Because it could petentially mean the end of the human race. It is a sin and if the idea of burning in hell for all eternity isnt valid enough then I dont know what is
Good lord everything else has been taken from western culture at least let us keep marriage for petes sake.
i ont believe that there is a good arguement against it. I am a straight guy but i think people should be with who they choose to be with
Nope, but until they can create a child with each other, they shouldn't get the same benefits.
Why should there be any argument to it? Read your bible and argue with it.
