Is a marriage LICENSE official proof of a name change?

Before we married, we went to the court house and got a license to marry. After marrying, we received a certificate.

Now I want to change my name with United Airlines, and they are asking for a photocopy of our marriage LICENSE.

Are they incorrect? Is a marriage LICENSE official proof of a name change?
The licence is proof of nothing except the registration of intent to marry. Nothing on the licence says you actually got married.

Everybody knows somebody that called a marriage off at the last minute. They still had the licence, but, as I said, it gives you the right to marry.

When you actually marry, the certificate shows the name as you wish to be known, it is legal proof.

The marriage certificate is, indeed the appropriate paper that shows you have , indeed, married, and is the paper that is needed by your employer, not the licence. Is a marriage LICENSE official proof of a name change?
They are just not phrasing it properly.

Before you marriage you went to get what it is..... a license to get married. It is not official until the person who married you fills out their info and then submits that to the county.

You sometimes get a certificate when you get married but it is not legal. Mine says ';not a certified copy'; at the bottom. It is just a memento.

What you have to do is go to the courthouse and get a copy of your marriage license that has been registered and all of that. You will get a copy that has a raised seal. That is legal for work, health insurance, DMV, the bank, social security and all of that.

If you don't work for UA and it is a flying or passport thing you can still fly. Even if all of your IDs are in your maiden name and the tickets are booked in your new name as long as you have the official copy of your marriage license on you there will be no problems. People get married and don't get around to getting every thing changed often.

If you do not have the certifate that has a raised seal. When you go to the courthouse get something like 4 or 5 official copies so you don't ever have to mess around with it again.
Whether they are correct or not, this is a legal document that states your name and surname as it was registered when you married. It's whatever there policy is for requesting valid documents. The only way to change your name legally is through the court system in your State. If you don't have this document from the court you cannot legally just randomly change your name. We use to say ';I wanna see my Shop Steward!'; it was said in fun. :)
Yes, a marriage certificate (license as you call it) is an office proof of a name change if you are married. Otherwise you can write an affidavit and file it with your District Officer for change of name.
you must show the license as proof of name change. The certificate from the wedding is not a legal document, just a memento for you. You were married when you received the license.

Yes, they are correct
It has to be an official certificate (or licence) from the State or the government.

If it is one of the pretty ones from the hospital, no, that one is NOT valid.
No; it's a public record. anyone can look at it.

It's their document of choice.
