In colonial America is it fair to say that women usually wore their hair ';up'; after marriage and ';down'; before?

I believe the change in marital status usually accompanied changes in the manner of hairdressing? Any info would be appreciated. I know wigs were commonly worn among men and hair pieces for women, but was there a guideline for changing the wearing of long hair loose or up?In colonial America is it fair to say that women usually wore their hair ';up'; after marriage and ';down'; before?
yes as a general rule but remember if a lady was not married by say 18 she was on her way to being an old maid!!!
