Things have not changed as much as you think. The pagans back then loved their elaborate rituals, whether it was for holidays, weddings, or whatever. We are doing much of the same traditions as we did back then, but the only difference is that we don't know ~why~ we are doing a lot of these wedding traditions. The original reasoning for the traditions has been forgotten.
I think the biggest difference may be from ';universal education.'; Previously most written material came from men, and so you could only read about the man's perspective on marriage; that is, they would speak of ';acquiring a wife.'; Back then women may have valued the wedding day as much as women today, but they did not have the education to know how to write about it. Now that women know how to read and write, a lot more written material comes from women... As a result, you now have more written material from the woman's perspective about the rituals of ';her special day.';How did marriage in most western culture evolve from a man acquiring a wife to a woman having her special day?
There was always a celebration then a woman was married. Even when they were considered 'property', it was the duty of the family of the bride to show their happiness by giving presents and putting on as large a celebration as they could afford. Since this was a transitional day for the woman, who went from maid to matron and experienced the loss of her virginity, she was treated as a queen to 'make up' for the pain she was going to endure on her wedding night.
These days women are no longer considered property, but the celebrations have become ingrained in our society. Now a days, however, the bride and groom themselves often share at least some of the expense of the wedding, often most of it if the bride's family cannot contribute. How did marriage in most western culture evolve from a man acquiring a wife to a woman having her special day?
Women are not property, but individuals and copartners in relationships, who bring something positive to relationships.
