Why is American opinion split between gay marriage as a fundamental right and gay marriage as an abomination?

Marriage is something that borders into religion. There is the religious part of marriage that some faiths have and then there's the legal (benefits and such). Although there are things called domestic partnerships or civil unions, which both same-sex and ';opposite'; non-married relationships can have, not all states/institutions recognize domestic partnerships in the same way marriages are recognized.

There is also the slippery slope claim that allowing same-sex marriages would lead to marriages with animals, children, chairs, etc. This goes into the concept of homosexuality and whether or not it's ';natural'; (it occurs in nature often) or some kind of disorder. Considering something like racism still exists, it's a bit obvious we as humans are still in the early stages of understanding ourselves and the world around us.Why is American opinion split between gay marriage as a fundamental right and gay marriage as an abomination?
It's a recurring issue in American social politics. Just like prohibition, or abortion or birth control, some Americans wish to dictate the options available to all based upon their own beliefs, and to control the actions of all based upon their own religious beliefs. The other portion of the American populace is willing to allow others to choose for themselves, and thinks that options are part of freedom.

Generally, once an issue comes to the forefront of national consciousness, those conservatives who want to force others to live by the conservative's morals tend to lose. See abortion, inter-racial marriage, birth control, etc. I presume that will be the case with this issue, as well. Why is American opinion split between gay marriage as a fundamental right and gay marriage as an abomination?
I honestly don't care about this issue seeing as it doesn't involve me directly, but I do see why each side has merit to their opinion.

Some religious people feel like allowing gay marriage is intruding on their religious beliefs and that it may end up forcing churches to wed people they don't want to marry.

The other side wants equal rights same as married couples and they feel like it's discrimination.

I honestly don't see why they can't just call it a civil union and give homosexuals the same rights as married people. That would make too much since though.
Some view marriage as a sacred religious pact between man and a woman, and think its sac-religious if its a same sex couple. I think homosexuals have every right to be wed just like hederosexuals, but convincing the country will be very difficult, maybe if they just changed the name, like to maragy, or muriage, lol, think its a quite pointless debate if you ask me
Is that the code for the mandelbrot set? Funny, I just got done answering a question about if beauty can only be manually designed by a sentient being... anyhow... the opinion is split in the US because we have a strange mix of religious conservatives and (a mostly younger) demographic that is very progressive.
Because there is also a large split in those few Americans who have some sense of acceptance and intelligence which allows them to realise that the occurence of homosexuality in some individuals is perfectly normal, and the great majority who would rather put their faith in what their sensationalist TV tells them than using their own brains.
';seem'; ';seem split'; you forgot to say ';Why is American opinion seem split between....';

You see there is ALWAYS other views that don't get press attention.

I'd say the media views SSM as a right and therefore they pick out those who are the most verbal or that seem the most bigoted and portray the other side as being entirely made up of that 1 viewpoint.

Anotherwards, they over simplified the other side's points in an attempt to make it easier to win.

It is standard practice.

In a war.. the first thing the Generals seek to do is portray the other side as ';less then human'; making it easier for their soldiers to kill the other side.

SSM Advocates have portrayed anyone who doesn't want SSM to be a bigotted fundamentalist who is forcing their religion on everyone and who is trying to deny a group of fundamental rights just like the African Americans in the mid 20th century.

It is an effective, if not, over simplified campaign.

Hopefully you haven't bought it hook line and sinker...have you?

Fact is..there are groups who say

A) is it NOT a fundamental right, Society puts limits on it.

B) there are larger societal impacts at stake here, then mere rights, love, etc.

BUT the fundamentalists waving their signs with verses Leviticus on it and ';God made Adam and Eve..not Adam and Steve'; on it provide them with more fodder then the more rational objections to it.
You can only look at it one of three ways: sexuality was either created by God, and so there are different ways it should be applied, and ways it should not; or the is a God, but He does not care how you express your sexuality; finally if there is not God, noting but pure, hateful prejudice can cause you to be against how a person's sexual life is behind closed doors.
American Opinion isn't split.

There's Americans, and there's religious types.

Anyone who puts fairy tales before their country and Constitution isn't an American as far as I can see.
Becuase some people feel that they need to dictate other people's lives to be just like them.

The other half believes that they should be able to choose and not listen to the others.

You can tell how I feel.
Because of fundamentalist Christians and the lies they spread about homosexuals and gay marriage.
Religion.
Because people think different things.
